LATEST NEWS Chasing after the Leeuwin Cup
Equirama offered many visitors a first look at the sport of campdrafting. With the new concept of combining three equine events, competitors were pleased to hear applause after a successful run. A total of 89 competitors riding 127 horses in four events, including the maiden, open, junior and juvenile, manoeuvred both their horses and a chosen bullock from the camp through the gates and then around three gates in the arena. Judge Peter Comiskey, of Nebo, Queensland, awarded point totals for both cutting out of the camp and effort in the arena. Consistency was required with multiple runs involved for the top money. Heath Stewart, of Bakers Hill, riding Impulse, had a narrow win in the Open Final with a score of 258, only two points clear of Kevin Hendersen in second. Mr Stewart, who collected $1340 in prize money and the inaugural Leeuwin Cup, said the new campdraft setup at Equirama was a credit to the management team. “Kent Osmotherly and his team supplied a top quality facility to run a professional event,” he said. “The cattle worked to our advantage, they were top quality.” Mr Stewart also competed well in the Maiden Final where he was placed second, but it was Megan Scott, of Broome, on her horse Brown, who beat him by a point to win the $1117 in prize money. Kelly Lyons was best in the Juvenile event with a score of 87, while Alex Gibbs was awarded the broad ribbon in the Junior group. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ |
